ABSTRACT:
IT compliance is here to stay, and naturally organizations are pursuing initiatives to better meet and demonstrate conformance with associated requirements. Because of its alignment with both prevailing conditions and a majority of regulations, one relatively common initiative will be the bolstering of internal network security to better isolate/segment off critical resources, thereby helping prevent unauthorized access to them. In this regard, a strong case can be made for organizations to implement - among other countermeasures - a gateway based solution that provides identity based control of network access. Compared to other approaches, such as VLANs or internal firewalls, an IBAC-enabled gateway is far easier to implement and manage as well as more effective, primarily due to the ability to work with user identities as opposed to ambiguous and inconsistent IP addresses. These benefits can be realized even further by ensuring that the selected solution leverages existing identity/directory infrastructure and incorporates features that deliver high levels of compatibility, manageability, and reliability.
