Poor quality of care takes a tremendous toll, not just on the system as a whole, but on the patients and their families at the center of that system. It also has a tremendous effect on employers, who already face unsustainable health care costs. When we evaluated one of our customer's claims, we found numerous signs of preventable complications that had cost our client significant amounts, not to mention the toll on the individual. Specifically, we identified the following preventable hospital- acquired conditions (HACs): • Fourteen instances of stage III and IV pressure ulcers • Twelve instances of vascular catheter-associated infections • Thirteen instances of catheter-associated urinary tract infections • One instance of a patient dying or experiencing a serious disability associated with intravascular air embolism • Five instances of foreign objects remaining in patients after a procedure. In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world

Something odd happened during Selectica’s roll-up strategy. Usually when a technology vendor acquires a number of providers at relatively low valuations, its focus tends to be on financially engineering the various SaaS, maintenance, upsell and other income schemes from the assets. But in Selectica’s case, the acquired became the basis of the company, in a manner in which the sum of the assets became an entirely different equation that it likely even bargained for before getting into the activity in the first place. But sometimes the uncertainty of post-merger integrations can lead to an outcome that benefits all parties involved (including customers) in ways that would be difficult to have imagined going into the process.
