Enabling a "digital business" is becoming an increasing priority for organizations; the transition to enabling a digital interaction model inside an organization is twofold. There are technologies that underpin interactions as well as the cultural and behavioral changes that support this transition. Enterprise social networks (ESNs), and more broadly, social workflow, can play a significant role in this particularly when thought of as both a platform and a social workflow embedded in business systems where users are getting work done. This study identifies several key areas of market opportunity and provides criteria by which vendors can be judged now and over the next 5 years.

Data center requirements are shifting as the business environment evolves to leverage new technologies. Organizations are turning to multicloud environments comprising a mix of private cloud, public cloud, and on-premise infrastructure to best address their unique needs. Understandably, this shift is putting a renewed emphasis on security, automation, orchestration, and agility. IT leaders are responding by building and deploying multicloud data center networks that leverage automation and software-defined networks (SDN) as a cost effective means of providing dynamic network control. Of course, while many organizations are recognizing the need for a data center upgrade, not all have the same drivers. All, however, need to make a business case for the investment. Here are four common inflection points that can help you to justify the need for data center upgrades that support business goals.

The bank wanted to modernize its global data center core and edge networks to move to the next stage of its private cloud journey. The bank has long recognized the advantages of server virtualization, and it wanted to move more aggressively to a software-defined data center. The bank was virtualizing all services, including compute, storage, and network, to gain greater business flexibility and deliver cost savings. But first, it needed an elastic, flexible, and production ready network to connect its data centers. The bank wanted a dynamically scalable network to interconnect its data centers in Europe, Asia, and North America, so that it could move toward a fully automated, self provisioned cloud. The global network needed to deliver performance at scale for the company’s highly virtualized resources, while also supporting integration of legacy assets into its software-defined data centers.

Websites have become critical components of most businesses’ core operations. They support the brand and ordering process, serve as data information resources and assist in overall customer care. Having poor website performance or poor reliability can destroy or severely damage a business and its reputation. Companies are facing more complex challenges than ever, requiring a variety of disciplines to come together to set a future vision and strategy. Historically, says Alec Binder, director, advisory at KPMG, these challenges have been treated as technology problems that can be solved simply by buying a better platform or solution. However, as explained in Part 1 of this series on KPMG’s Technology Strategy and Selection (TSS) framework, that outlook often does not drive the outcomes or the value that companies are expecting. For large transformations, a business-driven, technology-support effort is becoming an imperative, not a nice-to-have. The modular approach of the TSS framework allows for the right services and business ideas to be brought in seamlessly and holistically — toward setting a future vision and choosing technology that truly drives change.
