For decades, the predominant model for deploying voice technology was on premises. However, over the past five years, the opinion of cloud-based voice services, such as Office 365, has changed dramatically. Just five years ago, the majority of businesses either felt that cloud unified communication was not viable or were taking a wait and see approach. Today, the majority of respondents are planning a minor or major cloud UC purchase. For Microsoft customers, Skype for Business in Office 365 provides an excellent alternative to a traditional premises-based deployment.

When rack-mounted servers first appeared on the scene in the 1990s, they offered considerable advantages over the behemoth boxes they replaced. Their small, standardized footprint went a long way toward making data centers easier to manage. In the ensuing decades, form factor size and compute power have had an inverse relationship. Their universal standardization earned them the nickname “pizza box” servers, and it was a key driver of the scale-out computing model popular in the early 2000s. Populating a rack of eight servers and either clustering them or implementing failover from one to the other was far easier than previously possible.

Banks have been using credit scoring models for over five decades, so managing the life cycle of models is nothing new. Most have had some kind of process in place to ensure the models they develop are robust, validated and monitored from a performance perspective and that decision makers have confidence in them. In recent times, however - partly in response to the credit crisis in 2008 - the discipline of model risk management (MRM) has become more formalized and rigorous, driving the need for enterprise-level model information management systems. The regulatory scrutiny being applied to them is intensifying and spreading globally, with US and European regulators leading the charge. For example, whereas regulators were previously more interested in the numbers they were provided, now more regulators want to have a core understanding of the models banks used to generate these numbers.
