Object-based storage (referred to as OBS throughout this document) platforms continue to perpetuate cloud and enterprise IT infrastructure. As businesses move toward petabyte-scale data storage, OBS solutions are turning out to be the right choice for balancing scale, complexity, and costs. By way of their core design principles, OBS platforms deliver unprecedented scale at reduced complexity and reduced costs over the long term. Early OBS platforms suffered from "necessity crisis," were too cumbersome to deploy and, in some cases, caused a platform lock-in because of their proprietary access mechanisms. In spite of their from-the-ground-up design, a departure from how traditional SAN and NAS arrays are deployed and, more importantly, a lack of standard interfaces made it difficult for IT organizations to deploy OBS solutions in the infrastructure. Thanks to Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift becoming de facto access interfaces, this situation has changed.

Industry analysts expect rapid growth in the private cloud market over the next five years as CIO’s use private clouds to transform their IT environment. This growth expectation is not surprising as private clouds provide businesses with many features of a public cloud along with the security, control, and performance of a dedicated environment. While private clouds provide many advantages, they are also exceedingly complex and are difficult to manage. They must be implemented and managed by experts who understand cloud architecture and know how to upgrade, patch, monitor, and scale a cloud environment.

Contact centers play a major role in determining the customer’s perception of a company. Often seen as brand ambassadors, agents are the main interaction point for customers. It is therefore critical that they deliver personalized communications in the channels that customers prefer. Businesses should use cloud technology to add multichannel tools and support growing demand for chat, social, SMS and video. Cloud solutions allow contact centers to gain access to new technology capabilities and channels on demand with the ability to scale up quickly. They offer the best technology innovation as well as the ability to scale agents up and down as business needs change. This whitepaper provides background on cloud contact centers, their advantages and the essential considerations for selecting a vendor.

Cloud adoption is growing, but relatively few organizations have advanced cloud strategies. Achieving greater levels of cloud adoption allows organizations to materially improve strategic allocation of IT budgets, lower IT costs, reduce time to provision IT services, increase revenue, and improve ability to meet SLAs. Private cloud adoption is greater than public cloud. Additionally, private cloud/OpenStack adopters are more likely to expect better business outcomes. IDC sees web-scale public cloud making way for enterprise-class “provider-based cloud”.

Today, it’s unlikely that a single database will meet all your needs. For a variety of reasons—including the need to support cloud-scale solutions and increasingly dynamic app ecosystems—startups and enterprises alike are embracing a wide variety of open source databases. These varied databases—including MongoDB, Redis and PostgreSQL— open doors to building sophisticated and scalable applications on battle-hardened, non-proprietary databases.

Interest in cloud computing over the last several years has been phenomenal. For cloud providers, public or private, it will transform business and operational processes, streamlining customer on-ramping and time to market, facilitating innovation, providing cost efficiencies, and enabling the ability to scale resources on demand. Cisco's Virtualized Multi-tenant Data Center (VMDC) system defines an end-to-end architecture, which an organization may reference for the migration or build out of virtualized, multi-tenant data centers for new cloud-based service models such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
