Although data and analytics are highlighted throughout the popular press as well as in trade publications, too many managers think the value of this data processing is limited to a few numerically intensive fields such as science and finance. In fact, big data and the insights that emerge from analyzing it will transform every industry, from “precision farming” to manufacturing and construction. Governments must also be alert to the value of data and analytics as the enabler for smart cities. Institutions that master available data will leap ahead of their less statistically adept competitors through many advantages: finding hidden opportunities for efficiency, using data to become more responsive to clients, and developing entirely new and unanticipated product lines. The average time spent by most companies on the S&P 500 Index has decreased from an average of 60 to 70 years to only 22 years. There are winners and losers in the changes that come with the evolution of both technology

"Extracting value from data is central to the digital transformation required for businesses to succeed in the decades to come. Buried in data are insights that reveals what your customers need and how they want to receive it, how sales, manufacturing, distribution, and other aspects of business operations are functioning, what risks are arising to threaten the business, and more. That insight empowers your businesses to reach new customers, develop and deliver new products, to operate more efficiently and more effectively, and even to develop new business models. "

"IT needs to reach beyond the traditional data center and the public cloud to form and manage a hybrid connected system stretching from the edge to the cloud, wherever the cloud may be. We believe this is leading to a new period of disruption and development that will require organizations to rethink and modernize their infrastructure more comprehensively than they have in the past. Hybrid cloud and hybrid cloud management will be the key pillars of this next wave of digital transformation – which is on its way much sooner than many have so far predicted. They have an important role to play as part of a deliberate and proactive cloud strategy, and are essential if the full benefits of moving over to a cloud model are to be fully realized."

Most IT professionals today recognize that enterprise IT will be hybrid in the future. To provide the optimal foundation for each workload being deployed, the hybrid IT environment will include cloud-based infrastructures—from multiple providers—co-existing alongside infrastructure within the enterprise data center or a hosted environment. But not all hyperconverged solutions yield the same results. The right hyperconverged infrastructure can meet your IT needs both today and well into the future. In this paper, we will talk about where your data center needs to be in the next five years to meet changing business demands, and how the roles of IT professionals will evolve. We will also review “hyperconvergence” models, and how they can best meet your IT needs both today and in the future, as well as the benefits you can expect along the way. Finally, we discuss what to look for in the right hyperconverged provider, who will position your IT department for success.

If your business is like most, you are grappling with data storage. In an annual Frost & Sullivan survey of IT decision-makers, storage growth has been listed among top data center challenges for the past five years.2 With businesses collecting, replicating, and storing exponentially more data than ever before, simply acquiring sufficient storage capacity is a problem. Even more challenging is that businesses expect more from their stored data. Data is now recognized as a precious corporate asset and competitive differentiator: spawning new business models, new revenue streams, greater intelligence, streamlined operations, and lower costs. Booming market trends such as Internet of Things and Big Data analytics are generating new opportunities faster than IT organizations can prepare for them.

More than ever, businesses are considering a cloud solution for their enterprise resource planning (ERP) deployment over an on-premises system. Cloud technology appeals to these companies because updates and fixes occur automatically with little or no effort from internal IT staff, and because cloud-based solutions provide access to real-time data from anywhere. Employees want tools that make it easier for them to complete everyday tasks and make informed decisions that help the business grow. Aberdeen’s research report, “Top Performers Know It’s Time to Migrate to Cloud ERP: Here’s Why and How,” uncovers the reasons successful companies are choosing cloud over on-premises ERP models. Download this SmartBite for a quick look at the report’s highlights.

Databases have long served as the lifeline of the business. Therefore, it is no surprise that performance has always been top of mind. Whether it be a traditional row-formatted database to handle millions of transactions a day or a columnar database for advanced analytics to help uncover deep insights about the business, the goal is to service all requests as quickly as possible. This is especially true as organizations look to gain an edge on their competition by analyzing data from their transactional (OLTP) database to make more informed business decisions. The traditional model (see Figure 1) for doing this leverages two separate sets of resources, with an ETL being required to transfer the data from the OLTP database to a data warehouse for analysis. Two obvious problems exist with this implementation. First, I/O bottlenecks can quickly arise because the databases reside on disk and second, analysis is constantly being done on stale data. In-memory databases have helped address p

Security has become top of mind for CIOs, and CEOs. Encryption at rest is a piece of the solution, but not a big piece. Encryption over the network is another piece, but only a small piece. These and other pieces do not fit together well; they need to unencrypt and reencrypt the data when they move through the layers, leaving clear versions that create complex operational issues to monitor and detect intrusion. Larger-scale high-value applications requiring high security often use Oracle middleware, including Java and Oracle database. Traditional security models give the data to the processors to encrypt and unencrypt, often many times. The overhead is large, and as a result encryption is used sparingly on only a few applications. The risk to enterprises is that they may have created an illusion of security, which in reality is ripe for exploitation. The modern best-practice security model is an end-to-end encryption architecture. The application deploys application-led encryption s

A related recent development in the data center is converged infrastructure (CI). Instead of the traditional silo deployment approach to storage, compute, and network resources, all infrastructure elements are delivered and managed in a single environment, providing virtualized access to business services in an efficient manner. This is particularly suitable for cloud-based delivery models. However, since CI achieves lower costs through optimization of data center resources, it can be effective for all IT organizations, regardless of the way in which the services are managed or presented.

When evaluating single risks, underwriters and coverholders typically have to request exposure analytics from their portfolio managers and brokers, or gather their own supplementary risk data from a range of external resources, whether it is from Catastrophe Risk Evaluation and Standardizing Target Accumulations (CRESTA) zones, through to lookups on Google Maps. But all this takes valuable time, requires multiple user licenses and can generate information that is inconsistent with the underlying modeling data at the portfolio level.

For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure. And like most infrastructure decisions the question of cost is certainly a consideration. In this report we’ll explore that question, comparing the cost of an on-site hyperconverged solution with a comparable set up in the cloud. The on-site infrastructure is a Dell EMC VxRailTM hyperconverged appliance cluster and the cloud solution is Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud is more than just a new way to store and analyze data; it’s a whole new approach to getting more value from your data. Market leaders in every industry depend on analytics to reach new customers, streamline business processes, and gain a competitive edge. Data warehouses remain at the heart of these business intelligence (BI) initiatives, but traditional data-warehouse projects are complex undertakings that take months or even years to deliver results. Relying on a cloud provider accelerates the process of provisioning data-warehouse infrastructure, but in most cases database administrators (DBAs) still have to install and manage the database platform, then work with the line-of-business leaders to build the data model and analytics. Once the warehouse is deployed—either on premises or in the cloud—they face an endless cycle of tuning, securing, scaling, and maintaining these analytic assets. Oracle has a better way.
