We’re seeing a global trend towards responsible investing. Increasingly, institutional investors are recognising the potential for ESG factors to affect the valuation and financial performance of the companies they invest in. At the same time, consumer demand for responsible investments is surging, especially from the younger generation. “Responsible” or “sustainable” finance and a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors have moved firmly into the mainstream today. This booklet presents the proof to address the issues around responsible investment implementation: statistics from across investment markets that show how significant this shift is.

Digital technologies and increasing customer engagement point traditional financial institutions towards a wonderful new world of an enhanced customer experience. Herded by a wave of regulatory ‘enablers’ - through the yin-yang regulations in the form of the GDPR and PSD2 - the industry landscape is ripe for transformation for those willing and able to embrace this new world: connected customer ecosystems beyond their own institutional walls. In doing this, this creates more comprehensive customer journeys - and ultimately, better quality customer experiences.

In this paper, we provide an overview of the Two Sigma Factor Lens, designed for analyzing multi-asset portfolios and derived from returns of broad, liquid asset class proxy indexes. This lens is intended to be: • Holistic, by capturing the large majority of cross-sectional and time-series risk for typical institutional portfolios; • Parsimonious, by using as few factors as possible; • Orthogonal, with each risk factor capturing a statistically uncorrelated risk across assets; • Actionable, such that desired changes to factor exposure can be readily translated into asset allocation changes. Finally, we discuss methods for constructing and assessing the Two Sigma Factor Lens that can be extended to produce additional risk factors for new sub-assetclasses or cross-sectional risks that may not currently be captured by the lens.1 This factor lens, and our ongoing work to expand it, form the foundations of the VennTM platform.

There’s an old management axiom: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Yet many organizations do a very poor job (or no job at all) of measuring the business value of their IT investments. Four existing methodologies can be adopted as is or customized to suit specific needs. Firms should pick one, institutionalize it as part of an overall governance framework, and embed it in IT portfolio management.

Build or buy? When manufacturers have sought new leaders, they have typically done both: grooming talent in-house and paying market rates for the best thinkers and managers. With the growing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) shortage, companies will be harder-pressed to buy – and keep – top technical talent. Emerging and established leaders will command premium prices and field continual offers, increasing the likelihood they’ll make frequent job changes, taking their industry and institutional knowledge with them. As a consequence, manufacturers will need to build their talent pipeline, empower knowledge workers with the tools and intelligence they need to succeed, and provide professional development opportunities that exceed what competitors offer. This will be a marathon, not a sprint. What’s key to making the race for talent successful: virtual training environments that accelerate learning and innovation.

Hyper-complex production meets cognitive computing. Electronics manufacturing is surrounded by continuous complexity. Executives face rising resource costs in traditionally low-cost production markets. They must address increasing customization, shorter lead times, frequently changing requirements and shrinking order sizes – all while managing a sophisticated supply network. They need to examine automation potential and maintain critical institutional knowledge. Thinner margins and increased competition threaten consistent quality, risk greater downtime and reduce desired flexibility. Investments in new equipment and automation systems are increasing the amount of data available from the shop floor, but most is not used to its full potential. Now, cognitive manufacturing is transforming production to address such complexity.

In the quest to understand how a therapeutic intervention performs in actual use – in real medical practice outside the controlled environment of clinical trials – many life sciences organizations are stymied. They rely on one-off processes, disconnected tools, costly and redundant data stores, and ad hoc discovery methods. It’s time to standardize real-world data and analytics platforms – to establish much-needed consistency, governance, repeatability, sharing and reuse. The organizations that achieve these goals will formalize their knowledge base and make it scalable, while significantly reducing turnaround times, resources and cost. Learn the seven key components for putting that structure to real-world evidence – and four ways to take it to the next level.
