Downtime Is Not an Option: High Availability Next Generation Firewall Access to applications, data, and resources on the Internet is mission-critical for every organization. Downtime is unacceptable. Security for that network must also be highly available and not cause performance degradation of the network. The increased workload of security devices as they analyze traffic and defend users from malicious attacks strains computing resources. The next generation of security solutions must build in high availability that can scale as the business changes. Download this whitepaper to find out how high availability is at the core of the Forcepoint NGFW (Next Generation Firewall).

The current era in cyber security is characterized by three fundamental challenges: the complexity of the enterprise network and connected infrastructure, the speed of newage attacks, and the strain of overwhelmed incident responders. In many ways, the expansion of networks and continual adoption of new technologies - from cloud services to the Internet of Things - has expanded the attack surface and introduced new entry-points through which attackers can gain a foothold. This, combined with the ready availability of exploit kits on the Dark Web, has led to the ‘vicious circle of the SOC’, where incident responders are so busy fire-fighting that they rarely have time to implement the critical patches that would prevent the problem at source. As security teams struggle to keep up with the rising volume of routine attacks, a new generation of cyberthreat has also emerged, characterized in large part by fast-moving threats that make an impact well before humans have time to respond. Spam looks like a simple enough issue until you have to try to define it: after all, we all think we know it when we see it. Most people have a working definition along the lines of “email I don’t want.” While that’s perfectly understandable, it is difficult to implement technical solutions based on such a subjective definition. Read this paper to learn why SPAM is more than just unwanted email.

Anti-virus does much more than reactively detect known viruses; it proactively scans for unknown ones too. So, how do scanners really work? The aim of this paper is to reduce some of the confusion around the workings of AV technology, and to clarify what is realistic to expect from AV protection, particularly heuristic analysis.

Trust and consumer confidence is the foundation upon which the Internet has been built. Leading commerce and financial services companies worldwide have long used Secure Socket Layer and Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) technologies to secure customer communications and transactions. But with the rise of Web 2.0 and social networking, people are spending more time online and logged in, and they are communicating much more than just their credit card numbers. Unfortunately, Web security practices have not always kept pace with these changes. Many organizations use the SSL/TLS protocol to encrypt the authentication process when users log in to a website, but do not encrypt subsequent pages during the user’s session. This practice is risky because it leaves website visitors vulnerable to malicious online attacks, and can result in millions of users being unknowingly exposed to threats simply by visiting a trusted website. This white paper discusses the imperative need for Always On S

2017 was a momentous year in security, even though the DDoS landscape appeared to plateau. Maybe it was because Mirai hit so hard at the end of 2016 and the owners of other botnets were retooling to catch up. Maybe it was because news of large data breaches captured so many headlines, drawing the attention of both criminals and the public. Or maybe it is simply due to the cyclical nature of attack popularity that we have seen in the past. No matter the cause, our prediction is that the trend won’t continue in 2018, and it is not time to be complacent. The Mirai botnet is far from played out, as botnet creators are continuing to modify the source code for their individual needs and, with more connected platforms devices than ever, the Internet will continue to offer fertile ground for largescale attacks.

Attacks on financial services institutions are growing in both quantity and sophistication. Our new State of the Internet/Security report studies criminal behavior across this advanced and expansive financial services attack economy: from a popular authentication mechanism for staging credential stuffing attacks to the use of stolen identities to cash out ill-gotten gains. The report identifies leading DDoS and application-layer attack vectors, lucrative phishing variants, and how criminals stage decoy attacks to distract from their real targets. Attacks that prove successful in financial services often move on to other industries. Download the report, and see what petabytes of data tell us.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly transformed the digital landscape and the world we live in. Intelligent devices and sensors connect smart cars, robotic manufacturing equipment, smart medical equipment, smart cities, industrial control systems, and much more in a way that improves lives and saves businesses billions of dollars. But along with its benefits, rapid IoT growth introduces a new dimension of security vulnerabilities that dramatically escalates the nature and seriousness of cybercrime risks. In addition to traditional confidentiality cyber risks, IoT threats include attacks that can: • Render smart appliances useless • Shut down city power grids • Threaten lives through hacked pacemakers and other medical devices. Such security flaws not only endanger lives, frustrate customers, and disrupt business operations, but they create significant cost and public relations damage for IoT developers and manufacturers.
