There is growing evidence that more pervasive BI and analytics have a direct impact on competitiveness. Better decision making is more important when resources become restricted during a recession, so BI and analytics projects will still appeal to management. However, justifying large capital outlays for software will be challenging unless short-term benefits can be directly correlated with the investment. As more incremental projects are undertaken, it will be important to execute these projects within the long-term strategic plan of organization wide decision management. Read an active Q&A session with Dan Vesset, IDC Program Vice President of Business Analytics on building a successful enterprise BI strategy.

What defines cognitive manufacturing maturity? Our study found three stages of cognitive manufacturing maturity. We call those organizations in the earliest stage Observers, followed by Starters and Actives, respectively. These groups differ on two key characteristics: the presence of an overall strategy for cognitive manufacturing, and degree of strategic execution of multiple projects that enable higher project success and significantly fewer failed projects. Strategy is the crucial enabler of higher maturity. How do manufacturers get beyond the obstacles and barriers to increase cognitive manufacturing maturity? The obstacles encountered by our respondents are tied to organizational maturity. Overcoming them is fundamental to increase cognitive manufacturing success. In this report, we’ll first describe cognitive computing and how it gives rise to cognitive manufacturing. Then, we’ll review specific study findings and recommend actions for electronics executives.

When driving any major change within an organization, strategy and execution are intrinsic to a project’s success. Nevertheless, closing the gap between strategy and execution remains a challenge for many organizations, as explored in a recent Process Excellence Network report: “Shift Business Excellence Into High Gear: Drive Strategic Performance Through Process Excellence.” Companies tend to focus more on execution than strategy for quick results, instead of taking the time needed to understand the parts that make up the whole, so the right execution plan can be put in place to deliver the best outcomes. A large part of closing this gap is understanding that business operations don’t fit neatly within the traditional organizational hierarchy. Business processes are often messy, collaborative efforts that span people, departments and systems, making them difficult to manage within a hierarchical structure. Business process management (BPM) helps by redefining an organization accordin

Big data analytics offer organizations an unprecedented opportunity to derive new business insights and drive smarter decisions. The outcome of any big data analytics project, however, is only as good as the quality of the data being used. Although organizations may have their structured data under fairly good control, this is often not the case with the unstructured content that accounts for the vast majority of enterprise information. Good information governance is essential to the success of big data analytics projects. Good information governance also pays big dividends by reducing the costs and risks associated with the management of unstructured information. This paper explores the link between good information governance and the outcomes of big data analytics projects and takes a look at IBM's StoredIQ solution.

Despite heavy, long-term investments in data management, data problems at many organizations continue to grow. One reason is that data has traditionally been perceived as just one aspect of a technology project; it has not been treated as a corporate asset. Consequently, the belief was that traditional application and database planning efforts were sufficient to address ongoing data issues. As our corporate data stores have grown in both size and subject area diversity, it has become clear that a strategy to address data is necessary. Yet some still struggle with the idea that corporate data needs a comprehensive strategy. There’s no shortage of blue-sky thinking when it comes to organizations’ strategic plans and road maps. To many, such efforts are just a novelty. Indeed, organizations’ strategic plans often generate very few tangible results for organizations – only lots of meetings and documentation. A successful plan, on the other hand, will identify realistic goals along with a r
