Ensuring your data is compliant can be a fairly straightforward task. Your IT team works their way through the checklist, and stays out of trouble with lawyers and regulatory agencies. There’s value to that. But true data protection is more than regulatory compliance. In fact, even if you’re compliant, your organization could still be at risk unless you strategically identify and protect your most valuable data. Traditionally, you’ve been presented with IT security metrics—sometimes reassuring, other times alarming. But simply reviewing IT security metrics is not meaningful in and of itself. As an executive, you don’t evaluate issues in siloes. Instead, you excel at assessing issues in the broader context of your organizational operations. In other words, technical security data and metrics lack value unless viewed through the lens of business risk. When you’re presented with IT security metrics, your question is: What does this mean for my business? And ultimately, what data should I

Our industry has made numerous technological advances designed to protect homeowners, businesses and electrical workers. That makes every fatal electrocution in the home all the more distressing. Between 2010 and 2013, the U.S. saw an estimated average of 48 electrocution fatalities associated with consumer products per year, with large and small electric appliances chief among them1. Tragedies like these can be avoided, especially when the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) technologies needed to prevent dangerous events are readily available. As the principle NEMA representative at the National Electrical Code (NEC) Code-Making Panel Two, I saw public input asking for increased GFCI protection for the home during the 2017 code cycle. The code panel expanded the GFCI requirement for facilities other than dwelling units as part of section NEC 210.8(B). However, residential standards improvements were sidelined.

Code updates happen for one main reason: safety improvement. NEC (National Electrical Code) Article 408.3 helps take electrical safety for service entrance panels to a new level. The code, updated in 2017, includes provisions to provide shock protection via panelboard barriers. The barriers protect from energized conductors on the line terminals of the main overcurrent protection device (OCPD) in a panelboard. When the main circuit breaker in a panel is turned off, line side terminals and conductors remain energized from upstream via the utility or another panelboard. With these barriers in place and the main OCPD turned off, installers are better protected when pulling wires into the panelboard. Today, all panelboards are shipped with shock-protective barriers. However, barriers are new to installation procedures, so contractors may not recognize them and accidentally throw them out—easily and often.

One of the fundamental decisions in the design of data centers, server rooms and network closets is which uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to use. You cannot be certain that the power you receive from your local utility will be suitable for your equipment, or that it will always be available. And even when you are receiving good-quality power from the utility, equipment inside your facility (such as electric motors) can introduce power problems. A network/server UPS system conditions input power 24x7 to ensure that your equipment always receives reliable power and protection from damaging and disruptive power problems. A network/server UPS system also supports your equipment during power failures, providing enough battery backup runtime to outlast shorter outages. During longer outages, the UPS system will provide enough runtime to save files and gracefully shut down systems or to ensure that equipment is powered until standby generators are ready to support the load. When you’re designing a data center, server room or network closet, deciding which racks to deploy and how to configure them should be at the top of your list. Just like building a house, the surface details may steal the spotlight, but it’s the quality of the underlying foundation that makes the difference between success and frustration. Racks organize IT equipment, such as servers and network switches, into standardized assemblies that make efficient use of space and other resources. Depending on the options you choose, they can also improve power protection, cooling, cable management, device management, physical security, mobility, ease of installation and protection from harsh environmental conditions. Choosing the right racks and configuring them to match your needs will ensure that your IT equipment operates reliably and efficiently, saving your organization from costly downtime and other needless expenses.

"High-profile cyber attacks seem to occur almost daily in recent years. Clearly security threats are persistent and growing. While many organizations have adopted a defense-in-depth strategy — utilizing anti-virus protection, firewalls, intruder prevention systems, sandboxing, and secure web gateways — most IT departments still fail to explicitly protect the Domain Name System (DNS). This oversight leaves a massive gap in network defenses. But this infrastructure doesn’t have to be a vulnerability. Solutions that protect recursive DNS (rDNS) can serve as a simple and effective security control point for end users and devices on your network. Read this white paper to learn more about how rDNS is putting your enterprise at risk, why you need a security checkpoint at this infrastructural layer, how rDNS security solutio Read 5 Reasons Enterprises Need a New Access Model to learn about the fundamental changes enterprises need to make when providing access to their private applications.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect May25, 2018. If you process European Union (EU) personal data, GDPR likely applies to you—even if you’re not in the EU. That’s because the regulation is truly global in scope and applies to any organization that processes EU personal data, irrespective of where the companies are based or where the data is processed. At its heart, the GDPR legislation is about ensuring privacy is respected as a fundamental right and that personal data is kept private and secure. Elizabeth Denham, of the EU Information Commissioner Office (ICO), says “This law is not about fines. It’s about putting the consumer and citizen first” and “Issuing fines has always been and will continue to be, a last resort.” However, it’s important to note the costs of noncompliance can be severe. These can include a fine of up to 4 percent of global turnover (revenues) or €20m, whichever is higher; a temporary or permanent suspension of the right to access or proce
