Windows Server 2008 includes the Hyper-V role, which is a hypervisor that enables server virtualization. This new virtualization hypervisor enables a Windows Server 2008 system to host many VMs or child partitions that run directly on the hypervisor layer. Hyper-V servers and VMs can be centrally managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) to enable centralized management and advanced features. This demo video shows Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).

Many organizations have adopted virtualization as a standard for server workloads. But virtualization has not proven to be the “game changer” many organizations had envisioned. IT departments face huge challenges related to server sprawl, which has actually increased with virtualization. Although virtualization has brought benefits beyond the physical paradigm of one operating system per server, the true optimal infrastructure for organizations comes with adopting a private cloud infrastructure. Check out this white paper to learn the benefits of a private cloud and discover how deploying one private cloud solution can provide: Consolidated resources Flexible services Easy provisioning of new environments And more

Picking the right servers, storage systems and management software is essential to successful IT consolidation initiatives. In the past, either scaling up (bigger, faster servers) or scaling out (more servers) would have been the answer. But one platform does not fit all needs. Scaling right means picking the scaleup or scale-out approach—or combination of the two—that best fits each situation.
