Windows Server 2008 includes the Hyper-V role, which is a hypervisor that enables server virtualization. This new virtualization hypervisor enables a Windows Server 2008 system to host many VMs or child partitions that run directly on the hypervisor layer. Hyper-V servers and VMs can be centrally managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) to enable centralized management and advanced features. This demo video shows Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).

Virtualization does have its dangers, as it incurs greater stress on physical resources. While under utilization of CPU may be a driving factor to virtualize servers, other hardware resources may become overtaxed. Given that a host system has limited ability (depends on application) to page memory used by the guest systems, the most recognized bottleneck to address is physical memory (RAM). Options to programmatically alleviate memory bottlenecks incur performance issues when the disk is re-introduced. Another major component and perhaps less acknowledged is the disk subsystem. In many cases, depending the purpose and application of the guest/virtual systems, the disk bottleneck will be the most significant barrier to performance. The rise of virtualization as a business tool has dramatically enhanced server and primary storage utilization. By allowing multiple operating systems and applications to run on a single physical server, organizations can significantly lower their hardware costs and take advantage of efficiency and agility improvements as more and more tasks become automated. This also alleviates the pain of fragmented IT ecosystems and incompatible data silos. Currently, this virtualization juggernaut shows no sign of slowing. As businesses recognize the potential for increased reliability and scalability offered by virtual technology, they are ramping up their investments in data center modernization and upgrading. In fact, 33 percent of the respondents to a recent ESG survey on cloud usage said that making greater use of server virtualization was one of their top five spending priorities for the next 12 to 18 months.

This also alleviates the pain of fragmented IT ecosystems and incompatible data silos. Protecting these virtualized environments, however, and the ever-growing amount of structured and unstructured data being created, still requires a complex, on-prem secondary storage model that imposes heavy administrative overhead and infrastructure costs. The increasing pressure on IT teams to maintain business continuity and information governance are changing how businesses view infrastructure resiliency and long-term data retention—they are consequently looking to new solutions to ensure immediate availability and complete protection of the

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.

The software as a service (SaaS) model of application delivery, more commonly known as ‘cloud deployment’, in which software features are accessed through a Web browser, is an excellent way for manufacturing companies to get the bene?ts of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems without the need to build additional IT infrastructure. ERP functionality delivered “from the cloud” avoids the complexity and costs that often accompany on premisess ERP implementations, and typically provides a much more favorable total cost of ownership, compared to legacy on premisess deployment. Companies subscribe to the software features that they need and can add new ones as business requirements change, without buying additional servers or storage to support new functionality. The ERP features are the same as for an on premises ERP system, except that it is hosted and maintained on the Cloud provider’s infrastructure.

This white paper is focused on the design and architecture of an OCS 2007 environment in an HP BladeSystem infrastructure. The document outlines a building block approach to deploying OCS on the HP BladeSystem and focuses on how the design decisions around levels of availability, scalability, and the OCS 2007 feature set impact the hardware that is deployed and the version of OCS that is used. The white paper also covers a brief overview of the Microsoft Unified Communications framework including Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and Office Communications Server 2007 and an overview of the HP BladeSystem architecture and how the HP BladeSystem can help lower the total cost of ownership (TCO).

Security is a looming issue for organizations. The threat landscape is increasing, and attacks are becoming more sophisticated. Emerging technologies like IoT, mobility, and hybrid IT environments now open new organization opportunity, but they also introduce new risk. Protecting servers at the software level is no longer enough. Organizations need to reach down into the physical system level to stay ahead of threats. With today’s increasing regulatory landscape, compliance is more critical for both increasing security and reducing the cost of compliance failures. With these pieces being so critical, it is important to bring new levels of hardware protection and drive security all the way down to the supply chain level. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has a strategy to deliver this through its unique server firmware protection, detection, and recovery capabilities, as well as its HPE Security Assurance.

Hyperconverged infrastructure is radically shaking up the IT landscape, creating huge operational and economic benefits. Tier 1 applications such as Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle and others are among the many beneficiaries of this new generation of infrastructure. However, there are many vendors jumping on the market bandwagon, and not all systems that are marketed as hyperconverged really fit the criteria. IT organizations need to do their homework to ensure they are selecting true hyperconverged solutions.
