Although the cost of flash storage solutions continues to fall, on a per-gigabyte capacity basis, it is still significantly more expensive to acquire than traditional hard drives. However, when the cost per gigabyte is examined in terms of TCO, and the customer looks past the pure acquisition cost and accounts for “soft factors” such as prolonging the life of a data center, lower operating costs (for example, power and cooling), increased flexibility and scalability, or the service levels that a flash solution enables, flash solution costs become increasingly competitive with spinning media.

The all-encompassing data center is a thing of the past. Modern data environments are distributed and include remote and branch offices, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as cloud solutions such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS). There’s more critical data to back up than ever before. Plus, data silos and fragmented management mean poor visibility, which can make it difficult to comply with regional data residency and security rules as well as service-level agreements (SLAs). On-premises data protection has not kept pace. Dresner Advisory Services’ eighth annual Cloud Computing and Business Intelligence Market Study in 2019 shows user confidence at an all-time high, with cloud offerings outnumbering traditional on-premises offerings. Sentiment toward cloud and cloud BI turned sharply positive in 2018, with current and future user plans both trending up. Results from our 2019 Dresner Advisory Services New Year User Survey reinforced those findings with ongoing momentum. Sentiment is at an all-time high, and the majority of organizations—51 percent—use cloud BI in 2019. Cloud-based BI vendor products and services are now more plentiful than traditional onpremises products.
