Companies today increasingly look for ways to house multiple disparate forms of data under the same roof, maintaining original integrity and attributes. Enter the Hadoop-based data lake. While a traditional on-premise data lake might address the immediate needs for scalability and flexibility, research suggests that it may fall short in supporting key aspects of the user experience. This Knowledge Brief investigate the impact of a data lake maintained in a cloud or hybrid infrastucture.

Leading companies and technology providers are rethinking the fundamental model of analytics, and the contours of a new paradigm are emerging. The new generation of analytics goes beyond Big Data (information that is too large and complex to manipulate without robust software), and the traditional narrow approach of analytics which was restricted to analysing customer and financial data collected from their interactions on social media. Today companies are embracing the social revolution, using real-time technologies to unlock deep insights about customers and others and enable better-informed decisions and richer collaboration in real-time.

IT leaders working on customer service projects must display an incredible amount of diligence. An organization’s CRM system has become its lifeline to customers, but as customer needs evolve so has the requirements of CRM. According to Gartner, today’s CRM solution must include a laundry list of capabilities outside its traditional core functionality including: native mobile support of the vendor's customer service and support business applications; real-time analytics; industry-specific functionality and workflow; context mining of voice and text; scalable cloud-based systems; social media engagement; suggested next agent action; multimodal capabilities, such as chat within mobile self-service; and even co-browsing. Gartner surveyed the CRM field and evaluated each vendor including Pegasystems. Technology has become the heart and soul of every business. The hardware boundaries of IT have exploded beyond data centers, with mobile devices in the hands of both employees and customers alike. Application options have blossomed, from traditional to open source to software-as-a-service. Business has become global, bringing with it a demand for round-the-clock agility. Employees expect that the applications they use at work should be as easy to use as the Web apps they use at home. Integration remains difficult, because it’s sometimes impossible to know what will happen when someone tries to pluck one strand out of the pile. IT workload and system complexity will only get more challenging, bringing the need for disintermediation through service automation.

Although the cost of flash storage solutions continues to fall, on a per-gigabyte capacity basis, it is still significantly more expensive to acquire than traditional hard drives. However, when the cost per gigabyte is examined in terms of TCO, and the customer looks past the pure acquisition cost and accounts for “soft factors” such as prolonging the life of a data center, lower operating costs (for example, power and cooling), increased flexibility and scalability, or the service levels that a flash solution enables, flash solution costs become increasingly competitive with spinning media.

The old adage, "you get what you pay for" may no longer be true when it comes to traditional paid media investments. Effectiveness of traditional advertising and paid media - TV, newspaper, print - is on the decline, so marketers are choosing to push their dollars to social advertisements. In fact, 62% of marketers expect to increase their spending on Facebook marketing, along with other social media sites, over the next year. Marketers now must focus their attention on getting more from their advertising efforts by making sure that their media strategies work together. This means their paid media must work with their owned media to get more consumers to engage and participate - thus driving more earned media and amplification for their brand. Traditional multi-channel thinking simply does not deliver the results most businesses and, more importantly, their customers demand. Today, it's critical to go beyond thinking in terms of "multi-channel" and start focusing on unifying content across screens—only forking content to real channels such as social media and mobile apps. It's vital to really understand the user's context and to intelligently re-use and re-format content blocks to deliver the right experience at the right time on the right screen or channel. Download this eBook for 6 ways to rethink content when structuring and managing online properties.

It has been said that you can’t manage what you can’t measure, and you must measure what really matters. New service delivery models for IT service management, such as software as a service (SaaS), as well as emerging communications channels for support that include social media, will require some changes to the way you traditionally measure the effectiveness of your services. That’s why you should reexamine your service metrics as you begin to rely more heavily on SaaS, social media, and a more services-oriented approach to IT delivery.

In today's business environment, organizations of all sizes are struggling to maintain the advanced IT capabilities they need to be competitive while reining in cost and complexity. Shifting to off-premise hosted models, such as software-as-a-service (SaaS) and business process outsourcing, is a common activity undertaken to manage costs. One of the main challenges businesses face in adopting cloud and SaaS delivery models is the task of synchronizing data and integrating the multitude of systems already in datacenters with new cloud-based applications, not to mention within the cloud itself. Traditionally, this required organizations to leverage existing tools as well as custom development. This white paper looks at how two enterprises encountered problems with cloud integration and adopted IBM WebSphere Cast Iron to solve their immediate problems and extend use more broadly across their organizations.
