Breaking the link between access devices and virtual desktops (VDI) in a data center provides numerous benefits including cost efficiency and access transparency regardless of a user’s physical location. However, as more organizations move away from a physical desktop to VDI, they must decide whether they should build it themselves or purchase an all-in-one cloud service. This white paper highlights the benefits of using a managed desktop cloud service that provides infrastructural support while reducing infrastructure and operational costs. Access now to discover how other organizations are saving money by utilizing a managed cloud service.

The workforce is going mobile. According to Forrester, more than half of employees carry at least three devices for work. And many are bringing their own smartphones, tablets, and other devices to work, a phenomenon that’s grown so popular it now has its own acronym—Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). So it comes as no surprise that, according a survey by SpiceWorks, 60% of small and medium businesses are considering using a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as part of their BYOD strategy. Many of these organizations are relying on VMware® Horizon View™ (formerly VMware View), because it enables organizations to implement a VDI infrastructure that reduces operational costs, enhances security and supports a mobile workforce.

MBSI was providing approximately 800 virtual desktops to their employees using VMware Horizon with View and 8 VMware ESXi hosts and they were running an additional 140 virtual servers using 5 VMware ESXi hosts – all on a Tegile Hybrid SAN. “It was shortly after we converted from ICD-9 diagnosis codes to ICD-10 codes that performance for the VDI desktops began to suffer noticeably,” explained Shawn Wood, Assistant Manager of Systems Administration, MBSI. “We have relied on Xangati for a number of years now to help us quickly see where bottlenecks are in a short period of time. It's an important part of maintaining the integrity of our infrastructure.” Read more to learn how Xangati helped MBSI address this problem.
