Each year, a total of 180,000 IT service tickets are created and processed. These include requests and incidents of all kinds, such as the provision of the flight information displays, an employee request for a laptop, through to IT equipment for an airline customer. The Airport’s IT team therefore decided to undertake a complex and ambitious project, entitled “ITSM 2020,” which aimed to establish a uniform and future-oriented IT service management system that would effectively and efficiently serve all areas of Munich Airport. Munich Airport evaluated various bidders in a two stage process conducted on the basis of the European Union tendering procedures. Cherwell was able to hold its own against other ITSM solutions both technically and in terms of price.

The future of financial services is under pressure from profound digital disruption. Across the globe, there are forces, both regulatory and customer-led, that open up the market to new entrants and disrupt what customers are buying — and how. We live in the age of “multi”. Everything is becoming more complex, more “intelligent”, and more distributed. Hybrid cloud isn’t really the new frontier—some companies have been operating in a hybrid cloud environment for nearly a decade—the new frontier is learning HOW to take full advantage of hybrid cloud without creating data silos or busting the IT budget. Enterprises are, of course, always looking for ways to make their computer systems faster, more highly available, more fault tolerant, and simpler to scale. But in the age of “multi,” this is becoming harder and harder to do. Imagine running a social network with millions of U.S.-based users and millions of European users. You could host all your servers and data in the United States, but then all of your European users would have a slower experience using your application than their U.S.-based counterparts. You could host all your servers and data in Europe, but then the U.S.-based users would have a slower experience. An obvio

In recent years, Europe has seen a real boost in the building of renewable generation capacity. Germany is a notable example of a country with significant growth in renewables. As shown in Figure 1 below, since 2000, the average annual growth of installed capacity in Germany has been more than 15 percent, reaching 18-20 percent between 2009 and 2010. For the most part, favorable conditions for the development of renewables have been caused by support schemes, previously based on feed-in-tariffs and competitive auctions. Now the country has reached a point where renewables account for around 53 percent of installed capacity and around 36 percent share in total electricity demand, already exceeding the 2020 target of 35 percent.

European energy markets are undergoing many changes in order to adapt themselves to dynamically-evolving market conditions. Renewable generation capacity continues to rise in the Western European market, bringing more intermittency to the power system. Meanwhile, conventional power plants, fuelled by coal, lignite or uranium, are being decommissioned more often among western countries, affecting the security of supply and reserve margin levels. These changes need to be introduced and maintained by system operators, and each country has a slightly different approach to the challenges.

Many in the United States’ power generation industry no doubt long for the relative market tranquility of the late 20th century. The generation plants built and operated then were carbon-fueled or nuclear-powered, with a few hydro-electric plants sprinkled in. The economics were largely stable and predictable, often thanks to regulation that shielded utilities from market fluctuations. But even in those simpler times, when the market was far less volatile, there was still much due diligence required when investors and developers were considering multi-milliondollar commitments in new generation projects. Today’s market is more volatile, due in large part to the disruptive effect of low-cost natural gas and the subsequent, rapid growth of affordable renewable energy. As more uneconomical and inefficient generation plants go offline, there is, for the most part, sufficient carbon-free or carbon-reduced generation to meet the growing demand for electric energy. There are pockets of growth

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the new legal framework that will come into effect on the 25th of May 2018 in the European Union. EU regulations have direct effect in all EU member states, meaning the GDPR replaces the current Data Protection Directive and applies to all EU member states. The GDPR’s focus is the protection of personal data. In fact, GDPR is one of the biggest shakeups ever seen affecting how data relating to an individual should be handled—and it affects not just companies but any individual, corporation, public authority, agency or other body that processes the personal data of individuals based in the EU. As gatekeepers and processors of personal data, HR and People teams have a crucial role to play in preparing for this step change. The rules on how data is kept and used will become much more stringent, and it’s vital that HR and People teams become more transparent, communicating to employees exactly how their data is processed. In a world wh
