New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. This survey report shows that while finance departments take responsibility for ensuring there are data-management strategies in place that include securing their organisation’s data, they struggle to manage the huge volumes of data and gain valuable insights from it. This affects both their confidence in the security of the data and their ability to manage it ethically. The number one priority of finance leaders is to enforce technologies that enable insights instantly, any place, anytime, to enable better forecasting. Read report

Transforming Cloud Connectivity & Security in Distributed Networks Today’s digital transformation initiatives frequently begin with moving applications and data to the cloud. But traditional networking and security infrastructure, such as backhauling data from remote locations to central offices over MPLS lines, can’t keep up. Fortunately, new approaches that also move connectivity and security to the cloud are rapidly overcoming these hurdles. Technologies such as direct-to-cloud SD-WAN and site-to-site VPNs dramatically cut the cost of connectivity. However, they put pressure on other parts of the organization to adopt new ways of defending each site against internet intruders, protecting the use of web content, and securing data stored in cloud apps. In this webcast, we’ll discuss a new, integrated approach to connectivity and security. Used by enterprises and government agencies around the world to manage as many as 1,500 sites from a single console, Forcepoint’s branch security

Ransomware has taken the world by storm. CryptoWall extorted an estimated $18 million, and WannaCry locked up more than 230,000 computers across the globe in 2017. Companies of all sizes are sitting up and taking notice. Even brands with a strong security investment have fallen victim. We’ve seen ransomware cripple businesses: nearly 19% of businesses stop operations immediately after discovering a ransomware attack.1 Hospital emergency rooms forced to turn people away; global shipping logistics experience massive disruption; and even a summer blockbuster movie held up for ransom. The FBI estimates ransomware is now a billion-dollar business. Ransomware has been around for a while, and it has spiked in recent years. It secured 5th place as the most common variety of malware in 2017, up from 22nd place in 2014.2 Originally ransomware targeted individuals and was considered a consumer nuisance. It has now become a business menace.

"Managing and securing endpoints with conventional mobile device management (MDM) or enterprise mobile management (EMM) solutions is time-consuming and ineffective. For this reason, global IT leaders are turning towards unified endpoint management (UEM) solutions to consolidate their management of smartphones, tablets, laptops and IoT devices into a single management console. To increase operational efficiency, maximize data security and deliver on their digital transformation goals, they’ll need a UEM platform that does more than just promise success. The answer is a smarter solution, built for today, that brings new opportunities, threats, and efficiency improvements to the forefront. With Watson™, IBM® MaaS360® UEM features cognitive insights, contextual analytics, and cloud-sourced benchmarking capabilities. It helps you make sense of daily mobile details while managing your endpoints, users, apps, document, and data from one platform."

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud is more than just a new way to store and analyze data; it’s a whole new approach to getting more value from your data. Market leaders in every industry depend on analytics to reach new customers, streamline business processes, and gain a competitive edge. Data warehouses remain at the heart of these business intelligence (BI) initiatives, but traditional data-warehouse projects are complex undertakings that take months or even years to deliver results. Relying on a cloud provider accelerates the process of provisioning data-warehouse infrastructure, but in most cases database administrators (DBAs) still have to install and manage the database platform, then work with the line-of-business leaders to build the data model and analytics. Once the warehouse is deployed—either on premises or in the cloud—they face an endless cycle of tuning, securing, scaling, and maintaining these analytic assets. Oracle has a better way. Three common types of software make you more vulnerable than you realize. While complete and thorough vulnerability management is next to impossible, a few simple steps go a long way toward reducing risk. Download this ebook to discover what steps to take to begin evolving away from patch management toward software and vulnerability management. The hidden threat in securing your infrastructure from vulnerabilities lies with IT’s difficulty in managing third-party software. 2017 was billed as the worst on record for cybersecurity. No doubt, the continued rise of modern threat vectors has IT on high alert. In essence, IT professionals view their role as responsible for keeping the door shut. However, even with IT administrators keenly aware that most exploits can be averted simply by keeping the environment current, the task is no small feat and often isn’t done as well as it needs to be.

The Enterprise of Things (EoT) is the network of people, endpoints, and digital assets owned by and connected to the enterprise (or public sector organisation, in this context). It casts a wide net, to include content, communication, collaboration, transportation, and facilities – that is, anyone and anything connected to the internet. The EoT represents a powerful opportunity to transform existing public sector processes and create entirely new ones. Governments are moving on these initiatives because policymakers are legislating it, constituents are demanding it and because it presents an opportunity to do more with less.
