Reconstructing resource management tools to simplify tasks, drive collaboration and facilitate action. People who use technologies at home expect the same ease of use and intuitiveness for the tools they use in the workplace. But enterprise tools aren’t keeping up with the pace of change. Many product and portfolio management (PPM) solutions force resource managers to create entire workflows or navigate through multiple screens just to see the fundamental component of resource management—what their people are working on. Resource managers also cite shortcomings such as no simple way to perform everyday tasks, communicate in context with others, drill down into key information, narrow the field of resources and forecast financials and model outcomes.

The widespread use of mobile devices — smartphones and tablets — provides anytime, anywhere computing and communications resources for individuals worldwide. Both smartphones and tablets have made the transition from a personal resource, acquired and supported by consumers, to a professional resource, provided and supported by employers. For midsize firms around the world, those with 100–999 employees, mobile resources play a key role in improving workplace productivity as well as allowing greater flexibility in how and where work is done. New collaboration resources also allow staff in different locations to work together as efficiently and effectively as staff in the same office. The challenge for IT management is how best to coordinate the different collaborative and mobile resources and provide secure management of mobile devices and collaboration tools while enhancing workforce agility and productivity.

Employers should take note that a significant number of legal changes on the federal, state and local level have or will have a substantial impact on workplace policies and employee handbooks. It is critical for an employer to review, amend and properly update its handbook for 2018 so that it reflects the latest legal requirements. An employer also needs to understand what the legal update is and how it affects the workplace, as well as develop and implement policies, practices and procedures to remain compliant. Further, an employer may need to update its employee handbook based on internal changes (e.g., benefits, performance management). Below are relevant XpertHR resources, including Employee Handbook policy statements, to assist an employer in updating its own handbook.

The modern organization has recognized the need to embrace mobile devices in the workplace. Some have fully implemented a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program, while some have adopted a hybrid model of corporateowned and personally-enabled (COPE) devices. Many companies then choose to deploy an Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) or Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution to enable some control of the mobile devices that access corporate data. For companies at this stage of mobility, security is the next critical layer. As Gartner states, “It is becoming increasingly important that security leaders look at the anti-malware, mobile threat defense solutions market, the products available and how they should be used."

The workplace has changed radically, and conventional approaches to desktop management and mobile device management (MDM) are no longer adequate for the new digital workplace. Enterprise IT must quickly and dramatically change the way it manages users’ access to digital resources to deliver a consistent experience across all devices, even as operating systems and platforms relentlessly evolve. Fortunately, with the advent of Windows 10, IT now can rethink the way it aligns endpoint management with users’ new digital work styles. Establishing a culture of integrity, ethics and respect is the number one priority for companies in 2017, according to a new report. In common with the 2015 report, getting an organisation's culture right is the main objective for compliance professionals in the year ahead, with 85 per cent of respondents saying it is one of their three main goals. However despite this, only 32 per cent of firms indicated that they are planning to undertake a culture or ethics assessment in the next twelve months. In addition, workplace behaviour was rated as the lowest area of risk receiving attention by stakeholders (29 per cent). Mobile device management (MDM) tools allow companies to connect their employees securely to basic corporate network resources. Enterprise mobility management (EMM) goes a step further by enabling secure mobile versions of business-critical applications and data loss prevention to protect corporate information. But in today's workplace, employees and businesses deal with a vast variety of devices with different operating systems and form factors, from PCs and laptops, to tablets and smartphones, and now, increasingly wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints. The solution is unified endpoint management (UEM), which enables organizations to take a consistent approach to manage and secure every endpoint, any app and content, and across deployment use cases from a single holistic platform. Read this whitepaper to uncover VMware AirWatch®'s leading UEM approach that is benefiting organizations tremendously.
