As IT advances, organizations are adopting infrastructures that enhance agility and improve efficiency. Data centers are evolving to a state that is almost unrecognizable from only a few years ago. Numerous forces, such as cloud computing and powerful orchestration solutions, are combining to fundamentally change data centers, making them more powerful, sophisticated, flexible and efficient. Many organizations are adopting a hybrid infrastructure data center model that combines a variety of technologies and methodologies, including virtualization, private clouds and other internal IT resources, along with external options such as hosting, colocation, Software as a Service (SaaS) applications and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings.

he pursuits to reduce costs and avoid unplanned downtime remain primary operational goals in industrial plants. A convergence of factors has created an opportunity for industrial organizations such as manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals and water treatment companies to aggressively pursue both. Although the pace of investment can be relatively slow in industrial automation (IA), technological advances, economic trends and market pressures have created an environment in which plants are compelled to modernize operational technology (OT) in order to ensure maximum efficiency and minimum process interruptions. Simply put, OT is getting old. The industrial sector is heavily capital-intensive and traditionally utilizes equipment with long lifecycles. Organizations with such outdated automation systems are in dire need of OT modernization to keep up with the pace of change, customer demands and business priorities, and reduce the risk of critical failures and costly downtime. The hybrid cloud has been heralded as a promising IT operational model enabling enterprises to maintain security and control over the infrastructure on which their applications run. At the same time, it promises to maximize ROI from their local data center and leverage public cloud infrastructure for an occasional demand spike. Public clouds are relatively new in the IT landscape and their adoption has accelerated over the last few years with multiple vendors now offering solutions as well as improved on-ramps for workloads to ease the adoption of a hybrid cloud model. With these advances and the ability to choose between a local data center and multiple public cloud offerings, one fundamental question must still be answered: What, when and where to run workloads to assure performance while maximizing efficiency? In this whitepaper, we explore some of the players in Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and hybrid cloud, the challenges surrounding effective implementation, and how t

Our industry has made numerous technological advances designed to protect homeowners, businesses and electrical workers. That makes every fatal electrocution in the home all the more distressing. Between 2010 and 2013, the U.S. saw an estimated average of 48 electrocution fatalities associated with consumer products per year, with large and small electric appliances chief among them1. Tragedies like these can be avoided, especially when the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) technologies needed to prevent dangerous events are readily available. As the principle NEMA representative at the National Electrical Code (NEC) Code-Making Panel Two, I saw public input asking for increased GFCI protection for the home during the 2017 code cycle. The code panel expanded the GFCI requirement for facilities other than dwelling units as part of section NEC 210.8(B). However, residential standards improvements were sidelined.

Technology advances are changing the way employees work, consumers buy, and enterprises conduct business. Old methods for marketing products are taking a back seat to online distribution, and mobile devices are ubiquitous access points to the Internet. The resulting environment is ripe for the creation and distribution of new software for handling a constantly expanding array of functions. When there is an app for everything, organizations have no choice but to adapt or risk getting left behind as markets enter the era of the Web application programming interface (API).
