Integrated Computing (IC), also known as Converged Infrastructure, stands to revolutionize everything about IT. IC takes all of virtualization, storage, networking, and compute into a single system and allows total infrastructure oversight through one console. As you can imagine, the improvements in ease of use, agility, and efficiency are quite substantial. This is essential because infrastructure maintenance devours about three-fourths of annual IT budgets. IC changes all of that, delivering high efficiency solutions for the lifecycle of system, reducing costs and freeing up valuable personnel. The evolution of IT awaits.

The growth of structured data from databases, e-mail and other applications has been exponential. The increasing flood of data can lead to a host of problems — failing to recognize that data storage must be managed as a critical resource often results in a very difficult environment to manage, a higher cost of ownership, less responsiveness to change and added risk to the business. This white paper discusses how a dedicated, optimized network storage solution can increase data availability and reduce operating costs by simplifying management and improving capacity utilization.

As the drive to "do more with less" becomes a mantra for many organizations, optimizing space utilization is a key goal of many IT departments. Storage continues to be one of the major cost components of today's infrastructure deployments. Thin technology, including thin provisioning, offers efficiency benefits that can significantly reduce both capital and operational costs. However, implementations of thin technologies differ with the storage vendors. This Edison Group report looks at thin provisioning technology from the major storage vendors in today's marketplace and compares the thin implementations from seven storage array platforms, including Hewlett-Packard's 3PAR StoreServ Storage arrays.

According to recent ESG research, 70% of IT respondents indicated they plan to invest in HCI over the next 24 months. IT planners are increasingly turning toward HyperConverged Infrastructure (HCI) solutions to simplify and speed up infrastructure deployments, ease day-to-day operational management, reduce costs, and increase IT speed and agility. HCI consists of a nodal-based architecture whereby all the required virtualized compute, storage, and networking assets are self-contained inside individual nodes. These nodes are, in effect, discrete virtualized computing resources “in a box.” However, they are typically grouped together to provide resiliency, high performance, and flexible resource pooling. And since HCI appliances can scale out to large configurations over time, these systems can provide businesses with investment protection and a simpler, more agile, and cost-effective way to deploy virtualized computing infrastructure. In most use cases involving flash storage deployments, the business environment changes, driving a need for higher-performance storage. However, the case of Epic Systems Corporation software is the opposite—the storage requirements haven’t changed recently, but the options for addressing them have. Epic, a privately-held company founded in 1979 and based in Verona,Wisconsin, makes applications for medical groups, hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Epic software typically exhibits high frequency, random storage accesses with stringent latency requirements. IBM has been working with Epic to develop host-side and storage-side solutions to meet these requirements. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the combination of IBM® POWER8™ servers and IBM FlashSystem™ storage more than meets the performance levels Epic recommends for the backend storage supporting its software implementations—at a cost point multiple times lower than other storage alternatives.

Object-based storage (referred to as OBS throughout this document) platforms continue to perpetuate cloud and enterprise IT infrastructure. As businesses move toward petabyte-scale data storage, OBS solutions are turning out to be the right choice for balancing scale, complexity, and costs. By way of their core design principles, OBS platforms deliver unprecedented scale at reduced complexity and reduced costs over the long term. Early OBS platforms suffered from "necessity crisis," were too cumbersome to deploy and, in some cases, caused a platform lock-in because of their proprietary access mechanisms. In spite of their from-the-ground-up design, a departure from how traditional SAN and NAS arrays are deployed and, more importantly, a lack of standard interfaces made it difficult for IT organizations to deploy OBS solutions in the infrastructure. Thanks to Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift becoming de facto access interfaces, this situation has changed.

As the volume of unstructured data created and used continues to increase rapidly, organizations are faced with challenges around data storage. In response, many new technologies — specifically objectbased storage, software-defined storage, all-flash arrays, and cloud-based storage services — are experiencing rapid adoption. Yet object-based storage has been limited by the need to rewrite existing file-based applications — a prospect that is costly and requires more manpower than is practical for many organizations. Cloudian offers both an object storage platform and more recently an enterprise file services product. When deployed together, Cloudian's products are designed to consolidate file and object data into a single repository and can enable organizations to manage environments that span the cloud as well as on-premises.
